Celebrating 25 Years of Ethical Clothing in Australia: Why What You Wear Matters
Share
This October marks an incredible milestone: Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA) is celebrating its 25th anniversary. For a quarter-century, ECA has been protecting local workers in Australia’s textile, clothing, and footwear industry – ensuring they receive fair pay, safe working conditions, and the same workplace rights as other industries.
It’s easy to forget that every garment we wear passes through many skilled hands. From machinists to cutters, pattern makers to finishers – these workers are the backbone of our local industry. Yet, too often, their work remains unseen. That’s why ECA’s work is so important: it shines a light on the people behind our clothing while holding companies accountable for fair and transparent manufacturing practices.
A Week of Celebrations at the Immigration Museum
To mark 25 years of impact, Ethical Clothing Australia Week (7–14 October 2025) is being held at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne. This week-long celebration is dedicated to recognising the highly skilled workers who create the uniforms, PPE, and clothing we rely on every day.
Two standout events include:
👗 Working Behind the Seams – a commemorative exhibition tracing ECA’s 25-year history through worker stories, archival footage, and union accounts. This powerful display showcases how far the movement has come in protecting workers’ rights and promoting ethical manufacturing.
🎤 Voices Behind the Seams – an evening event where workers themselves share their stories, challenges, and love for their craft. This is a rare chance to hear directly from the people whose hands bring clothing to life – reminding us why safe workplaces and fair treatment matter.
These events aren’t just celebrations; they’re a call to action. They remind us that every clothing choice we make has an impact, and by supporting locally made, ethically accredited brands, we’re investing in dignity, fairness, and sustainability.
Why It Matters for You
Choosing ethically made clothing means more than just wearing a garment – it’s about wearing your values. When we buy from accredited brands, we’re supporting workers who are treated with respect, businesses that uphold transparency, and a system that prioritises people over profit.
At Empowered Clothing, this belief is woven into everything we do. Our pieces are created with intention – not just in style, but in energy. We believe what you wear should make you feel good on the outside and aligned on the inside.
