Theme of the Week: Happy New Year… Again?
Share
What if I told you… we might actually be celebrating New Year at the “wrong” time?
April 1st has long been linked to what was once considered the real New Year - before calendars were changed and systems were reset.
And interestingly… those who continued to celebrate it around this time were labelled “April Fools.”
So what if… they weren’t the fools at all?
A Little Bit of History
Before the modern calendar we follow today, many ancient cultures aligned their year with natural cycles - particularly the Spring Equinox (around late March).
This made sense…
🌱It marked new life
🌸The beginning of growth
🌞Longer, lighter days
In 1582, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced to replace the older Julian calendar.
With this shift, New Year was officially moved to January 1st.
But here’s where it gets interesting… Not everyone adopted the change straight away.
Some people continued to celebrate the New Year around the end of March and into April — following the natural seasonal rhythm they had always known.
And those people?
They were labelled… “April Fools.”
The Origin of April Fools’ Day
Over time, this turned into a tradition of playing tricks, jokes, and pranks on April 1st.
But the origin story points to something deeper:
- A divide between natural living vs structured systems
- Following intuition vs following rules
- Staying aligned with nature vs conforming to change
So what if April Fools’ Day isn’t just about jokes… What if it’s a quiet reminder of a time when we were more connected to natural rhythms?
The 13-Month Calendar
There’s also growing curiosity around the idea of a 13-month calendar - one that aligns more closely with lunar cycles.
The moon completes roughly 13 cycles per year, not 12.
And many ancient systems - including those used in parts of:
-
Ancient Egypt
-
Indigenous cultures
-
Early lunar calendars
…were based on these natural rhythms.
Instead of squeezing life into uneven months… this approach creates:
🌕 Equal cycles
🌊 A consistent rhythm
🌿 A more natural flow through the year
You Are Not Separate From Nature
Here’s the part that really lands… Your body is made up of around 70–80% water.
And water responds to:
-
Rhythm
-
Frequency
-
Energy
So it makes sense that when we’re:
-
Out of sync
-
Over-scheduled
-
Constantly “on”
We feel it.
That heaviness.
That overwhelm.
That sense of pushing through life instead of moving with it.
What If You Tuned Into Your Cycles?
Instead of living purely by the clock… what if you started living by your energy?
Some days you feel:
- Clear
- Energised
- Ready to go
Other days:
- Slower
- Emotional
- Needing space
And instead of overriding it … you honoured it.
Practical Ways to Realign
This doesn’t have to be complicated or “woo woo.”
It’s actually really simple.
✔️ Check in before you get out of bed
(How do I feel today? What do I need?)
✔️ Create space for stillness and silence
(This is where your system resets, recharges and recalibrates)
✔️ Spend time in natural light
(Sunlight helps regulate your internal rhythm)
✔️ Walk in nature
(It stabilises your energy and brings you back to centre)
✔️ Follow your energy, not just your schedule
(Some days are for action, some are for restoration)
A Different Kind of “New Year”
There’s something about this time of year - especially around April - that feels like a natural reset.
Not forced.
Not driven by pressure.
More like…
- A quiet beginning
- A gentle recalibration
- A return to what feels right
Bringing It Back to You
This week isn’t about rejecting the world we live in… It’s about reconnecting to yourself within it.
Because when you:
-
Tune into your own rhythm
-
Honour your energy
-
Create space to reset
Life starts to feel…
- Lighter
- Clearer
- More aligned
Final Thought
Maybe the goal isn’t to keep up with life… Maybe it’s to move with it.
And maybe… just maybe… those “April Fools” were simply the ones who stayed connected to a more natural way of living.
💫Just Choose Life
Choose to slow down.
Choose to tune in.
Choose what feels right for you.
Because the more aligned you are with your natural rhythm… the more life starts to make sense.
