Walk Yourself Like a Dog🐾🌿

Walk Yourself Like a Dog🐾🌿

Why Nature Might Be the Most Underrated Wellness Tool We Have

This week I'd like to share one of the simplest wellness practices I know.

In fact, it's so simple most people overlook it.

Walk yourself like a dog.

Stay with me.

If you have a dog, you'll know exactly what I mean.

No matter how busy you are, no matter how much work is piling up, no matter what else is going on, eventually the dog needs a walk.

And when the dog really needs a walk, you don't sit there negotiating with it.

You don't say: "I'm too busy," or  "Maybe tomorrow," or even "I'll do it when I've finished everything else."

You simply get up and go. Because you know the dog needs it.

But here's my question: Who's walking you?

Your Nervous System Needs Daily Resetting Too

Over the years I've realised that my daily walk isn't exercise.

It's healing and therapeutic.

It's where I clear my head.

It's where I discharge stress.

It's where I reconnect with myself.

It's where I move out of the noise and back into clarity.

I call it my Outdoor Office.

Some of my best ideas, biggest downloads, clearest decisions and most creative solutions happen while walking.

Not sitting at a desk.

Not staring at a screen.

Not trying harder.

Just simply walking.

Nature has a remarkable way of helping us return to ourselves.

And science is now proving what many of us have felt instinctively for years.

Why Nature Helps Us Feel Better

When we spend too much time indoors, glued to devices, rushing from one task to the next, our nervous system stays on high alert.

Many people are living in a constant state of:

  • Stress

  • Overwhelm

  • Mental fatigue

  • Emotional overload

  • Decision fatigue

  • Burnout

The body begins to operate from survival mode. But when we step into nature, something changes.

Research shows that time outdoors can:

🌿Lower cortisol (our primary stress hormone)

🌿Help regulate the nervous system

🌿Improve mood and emotional wellbeing

🌿Increase feelings of calm and connection

🌿Support clearer thinking and creativity

🌿Reduce symptoms of stress and burnout

It's almost as though nature reminds the body what balance feels like.

More Than Exercise

For me, walking isn't about steps. It's about energy.

Every day we absorb information, emotions, pressure, responsibilities and stress.

Particularly if you're someone who cares deeply for others, works with people, manages a family, or constantly holds space for everyone around you.

Eventually that energy needs somewhere to go. Nature provides that outlet.

It's why after a walk we often feel:

  • Lighter

  • Clearer

  • More grounded

  • More peaceful

  • More ourselves

Not because anything outside has changed. But because something inside us has shifted.

The Missing Ingredient: Silence, Stillness and Space

One thing I was reminded of recently while spending time in Bali is how much people are craving peace.

Not more information.

Not more content.

Not another thing to do.

Peace.

And peace doesn't arrive through busyness. It arrives through creating space.

One of my favourite teachings is that we access silence, stillness and space by surrendering stress to find serenity.

The walk becomes a doorway into that.

As your body slows down, your breathing changes.

As your breathing changes, your nervous system settles.

As your nervous system settles, your mind becomes quieter.

And in that space, something beautiful happens.

You can finally hear yourself again.

The Outdoor Office

I don't always walk first thing in the morning.

Some days it's midday.

Some days it's between appointments.

Some days it's later in the afternoon.

The timing doesn't matter.

The consistency does.

Because every time I step outside I notice the same thing:

I come back feeling better than when I left.

More present.

More aligned.

More connected.

More capable of handling whatever life is throwing at me.

A Simple Challenge This Week

This week's invitation is simple.

Walk yourself like a dog.

Not because you're trying to lose weight.

Not because your watch tells you to.

Not because someone else says you should.

Do it because your nervous system needs it.

Your energy needs it.

Your mind needs it.

And most importantly, because you deserve the same level of care that you so freely give to everyone else.

Even 20 minutes can make a difference.

Leave your phone behind.

Slow down.

Notice the trees.

Listen to the birds.

Feel the sun on your face.

Allow yourself to reconnect.

Final Thoughts

In a world that constantly encourages us to go faster, nature invites us to slow down.

To breathe.

To reset.

To remember what really matters.

The more I walk, the more I realise that wellbeing doesn't always require complicated solutions.

Sometimes the answer is remarkably simple.

Get outside. Move your body. Create some space. Let nature do what nature does best.

And if you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed. or caught up in the busyness of life right now, perhaps this is your reminder:

🐾Walk yourself like a dog. Your nervous system will thank you for it.

💫Just Choose Life. Choose consciously. Live aligned.
